Skull Base Surgery

Skull base surgery is a specialized type of surgery that focuses on treating diseases at the base of the skull. This includes regions like the under surface of the brain and important nerves and vessels that exit out of the brain to support senses like sight, smell, and hearing. Otolaryngology skull base surgery is minimally invasive and practically always performed using a team approach. An ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or otolaryngologist, generally teams with a neurosurgeon to access these areas through the nose, eyelid, face, or over and behind the ear. The advantages of Skull base surgery include lower risk of infection and injury to cerebral structures and nerves, less risk of defect and a shorter recovery time. Skull base surgery may be an extremely specialized, minimally invasive surgical technique for evaluating, diagnosing and treating benign or cancerous growths situated on the bottom of the brain, the bottom of the skull and therefore the higher vertebrae of the spinal column.
Common skull base conditions include:

  • Pituitary tumours
  • Sinus tumours
  • Orbital tumours (located near the eye).
  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Petrous apex lesions
  • Aneurysms
  • Meningioma.
