Otorhinolaryngology

Otorhinolaryngology

Otorhinolaryngology is a medical specialty which deals with ears, nose, and throat. It is also called otolaryngology-head and neck surgery because specialists are skilled in both medicine and surgery. Doctors who specialize in this region are called Otorhinolaryngologists, otolaryngologists, ENT surgeons or head and neck surgeons, ENT doctors. They are generally called as ENT physicians. The most common reasons for patients to visit an otolaryngologist were problems with their ear, nose and throat. Otolaryngologists diagnose and treat diseases of the ears, nose, larynx (voice box), mouth, and throat, sinuses, as well as structures of the neck and face.

Skull Base Surgery

Skull Base Surgery

Skull base surgery is a specialized type of surgery that focuses on treating diseases at the base of the skull. This includes regions like the under surface of the brain and important nerves and vessels that exit out of the brain to support senses like sight, smell, and hearing. Otolaryngology skull base surgery is minimally invasive and practically always performed using a team approach. An ENT (ear, nose, and throat) specialist, or otolaryngologist, generally teams with a neurosurgeon to access these areas through the nose, eyelid, face, or over and behind the ear. The advantages of Skull base surgery include lower risk of infection and injury to cerebral structures and nerves, less risk of defect and a shorter recovery time. Skull base surgery may be an extremely specialized, minimally invasive surgical technique for evaluating, diagnosing and treating benign or cancerous growths situated on the bottom of the brain, the bottom of the skull and therefore the higher vertebrae of the spinal column.
Common skull base conditions include:

  • Pituitary tumours
  • Sinus tumours
  • Orbital tumours (located near the eye).
  • Acoustic neuroma
  • Petrous apex lesions
  • Aneurysms
  • Meningioma.

Head and Neck Surgery

Head and Neck Surgery

Head and neck surgery is a dynamic new approach that allows surgeons to remove cancers of the head and neck with the application of technical endoscopes and cameras without extrinsic incisions and typically with little or no change in speech, appearance, and swallowing function. The ambitions of head and neck surgery are to develop innovatory cures, translational research, and minimize the risks and retrieval time.

Rhinology and sinus surgery

Rhinology and sinus surgery

Rhinology is study of the medical science devoted to the structure, physiology and disorders of nose. Experts in this field are known as Rhinologists who have special proficiency in the medical and surgical treatment of nasal and sinus diseases.

Sinus surgery is a process that is available to ENTs to help patients retrieve from intermittent sinus symptoms. Sinus surgery allows the doctor to open pathways and enhance airflow. Another usual cause for surgery is a nasal neoplasm. Enlarged cysts or clusters of cysts are inflammation of the nasal membrane inside the nose.
Types of Sinus surgery:

  • Endoscopic trans nasal transsphenoidal surgery
  • Nasal cysts
  • Balloon sinoplasty
  • Endoscopic sinus surgery
  • Septoplasty
  • Rhinoplasty

Otology/Neurotology

Otology/Neurotology

Otology is a branch of medicine which studies general and pathological anatomy and physiology of the ear (hearing and vestibular sensory systems) as well as their disorders, diagnosis and treatment. Otologic surgery generally refers to surgery of the middle ear and mastoid connected to chronic otitis media, similar as tympanoplasty, or ear drum surgery, ossiculoplasty, or surgery of the hearing bones, and mastoidectomy. Otology also contains surgical management of conductive hearing loss, such as stapedectomy surgery for otosclerosis.

Neurotology, a interrelated field of medicine and subspecialty of Otolaryngology, is the study of disorders of the inner ear, which can leading to hearing and balance diseases. Neurotologic surgery usually refers to surgery of the inside ear or surgery that implicates penetrating the inner ear with risk to the hearing and balance organs, including labyrinthectomy, cochlear implant surgery, and surgery for clots of the temporal bone, such as intracanlicular acoustic neuromas.

Cochlear Implants

Cochlear Implants

A cochlear implant is a small electronic device that electrically stimulates the cochlear nerve (nerve for hearing). The implant has external and internal parts. The external part sits behind the ear. It picks up sounds with a microphone. It further processes the sound and transmits it to the internal part of the implant. A cochlear implant may help someone with hearing loss regenerate or enhance the capability to hear and understand speech. A cochlear implant is distinguishable than a hearing aid. A hearing aid makes sounds louder but may not significantly enhance speech understanding.

Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery

The degree of conditions that otolaryngologists assess, and treat are extensively changed and can include the entire face, lips, nose, ears, and neck. Facial plastic surgery is a part of otolaryngology which is divided into two classes: corrective and reconstructive. Reconstructive plastic surgery is conducted for patients with inborn inconsistencies, for example, skin pigmentations on the face, congenital fissure and sensation of taste, distending ears, and a depraved grin. Various conditions like accidents, injury, consumes, or a former medical processes are additionally improved with this kind of medical processes. Moreover, this technique is needed to treat living disorders like skin malice. Corrective facial plastic surgery is executed to enhance visual presence of the facial highlights and structures. Common techniques include eye lifts, rhinoplasty, facelifts, jawline and cheek inserts, liposuction, and strategies to manage facial wrinkles. An otolaryngology specialist is very certifiably skilled to approach these issues.

Bell's paralysis is an unexplained occasion of facial muscle weakness or palsy. It begins short and worsens over 48 hours. This condition results from damage to the facial whim-whams (the 7th cranial whim-whams). Pain and discomfort generally do on one side of the face or head.

Bell’s palsy can strike anyone at any age. It occurs most constantly in pregnant women, and people who have diabetes, influenza, a deep snap, or another upper respiratory complaint. Bell's palsy affects men and woman equally. It's less familiar before period 15 or after period 60.

Allergic Rhinitis

Allergic Rhinitis

Rhinitis, also known as coryza, is irritation and tenderness of the mucous membrane in the nose. Common signs and symptoms are a runny nose, sneezing, stuffy nose, and post-nasal drip. The most common type of rhinitis is allergic rhinitis, which is regularly activated by airborne allergens such as pollen and dander. Allergic rhinitis may produce other symptoms, such as sneezing and nasal itching, headache, coughing, malaise, fatigue, and perceptive impairment. The allergens may also affect the eyes, causing reddened or itchy eyes, watery and puffiness nearby eyes. The inflammation is caused due to degranulation of mast cells in the nose. When mast cells degranulate, they release histamine and other chemicals, starting an inflammatory process that can generate indications outside the nose, such as fatigue and malaise.
Contagious Rhinitis or Rhino sinusitis can be treated by vaccinations while antipathetic rhinitis can be treated by intranasal corticosteroids and antihistamines.
