Debajit Sarma

Biography

Debajit Sarma is presently working as Head, Division of Aquaculture at ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai.  He is having 25 years of experience as Principal Scientist and other positions. He worked as Director (Acting) at ICAR-DCFR for 3 years. Dr. Sarma obtained his B.F.Sc. degree from College of Fisheries, Raha in 1994; M. F. Sc. in 1997 from ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education, Mumbai; DBM in 1996 from NMIMS, Mumbai; Ph.D. in Aquaculture from Gauhati University in 2004 and D.Sc in the specialized area of Biological Science from Commonwealth Vocational University in 2020. He has been conferred “Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi ICAR award”, “Fellow of Academy of Environmental Biology”, “AEB Gold Medal”, “Fellow of Zoological Society of India”, “Fellow of Coldwater Fisheries Society of India”, “Dalela Oration Award”, “Eminent Scientist Award”, “IBRF Excellence Award”, “Scientist of the Year-2017”, “VRP Sinha Award”, “CFSI Honour” for his extraordinary work in the field of coldwater fisheries and aquaculture. He also received “University Award” from Rajiv Gandhi University and Gauhati University for his most valuable collaborative work between both the institutions.  Dr. Sarma was felicitated with "Certificates of Appreciation" from the ‘Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Mizoram’, ‘Govt. of Sikkim’, ‘Govt. of Nagaland’, ‘Govt. of J &K’, ‘Assam Bhoreli Angling and Conservation Association’, ‘Jasingfaa Aqua-tourism Centre’, ‘Guamco Society’ and many others for his outstanding contribution in the field of Coldwater Fisheries Management and Conservation to the state.

His area of research interest is Aquaculture & Conservation. He has standardized the hatchery management and seed production technology of golden and chocolate mahseer in India. Dr. Sarma has noteworthy contribution of establishing various mahseer eco-tourism centers in India and his concept of "Mahseer Watching" is well recognized. He is having in his credit 109 research papers in peer-reviewed international and national journals and more than 200 research/technical articles including books, book chapters, manuals, bulletins etc. Dr. Sarma is the Editor of three important International/National research journals and has been reviewer for several national and international peer reviewed journals. He has commercialized 3 technologies, 3 product design & copy rights and 1 patent (granted). He has successfully completed more than 20 research projects funded by different scientific organizations developing package of practices for the benefit of the multiple stakeholders. Dr. Sarma has established the "Environmental Fish Biology and Nutrient Profiling laboratory”, “RAS facility”, “Larval rearing unit of ornamental fishes”, “Coldwater fish museum”, “Mahseer hatchery” at ICAR-DCFR, Bhimtal during 2007-2022. During the tenure of 26 years of service he has guided 1 National Post Doctoral Fellowship, 10 Ph.D., and 12 M. F. Sc./M.Sc. as Major Supervisor. He has organized 16 national seminars/symposia in the capacity of organizing secretary and also conducted 51 national HRD program as course Director/Coordinator benefiting 10000 fish farmers and state fisheries officers. He has participated and presented papers in several international seminars and training programs in abroad in various capacities.
