Surgical Site Infections

These are the infections that occur after a surgery in the body at the site of surgery. These may be due to Staphylococcus, Streptococcus, or Pseudomonas.

Surgical Site Infections (SSI’s) are of three types.

Superficial incisional SSI: This occurs in the area of skin where the abscission was done.

Deep incisional SSI: This occurs beneath the abscission area in muscle & tissues surrounding the muscles.

Organ or space SSI: This can be in any region of the body apart from skin, muscle, and surrounding tissue that was involved in the surgery. This might be a body organ or space between organs.
