Marc Ruff

Research director

IGBMC - CERBM

France

Biography

Marc Ruff is team leader at the IGBMC (Institute of genetics, molecular and cell biology) in Illkirch (France) and director of the IGBMC Integrated Structural Biology Department. He was assistant professor at the University of Strasbourg from 1990 to 2010, where he was teaching molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and structural biology. Since 2010 he is research director at the CNRS (French agency for scientific research).
He has his expertise in integrative structural biology. In the course of his career, he tackled several scientific topics: From the translation of genetic information by aminoacyl tRNA synthetases (he solved the first structure of a eukaryotic synthetase in complex with its tRNA, through the regulation of gene transcription by nuclear hormone receptors (he determined the first structures of the hormone-binding domain) to his current translational project which is the structural and functional study of the HIV pre-integration complex from nuclear import to viral DNA integration. This study enabled him to propose the first structural model for the concerted integration of viral DNA into host DNA.In parallel, he is conducting drug design studies for two main targets: HIV integrase and bacterial proteins involved in nosocomial diseases.
