Prebiotics & Probiotics

Prebiotics & Probiotics

Prebiotics are types of fiber that the body can't digest, but they serve as food for the good bacteria in your gut. Probiotics, on the other hand, are live bacteria and yeast that are found in certain foods and supplements. You can think of prebiotics as the fuel that helps the good bacteria (probiotics) in your gut grow and work better. Both prebiotics and probiotics play a key role in keeping your gut healthy, supporting your immune system, and contributing to your overall health.

Microbe-Host Interactions

Microbe-Host Interactions

Microbe-host interactions are the ways microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, and viruses, interact with their hosts, like plants and animals. These relationships can be helpful, harmful, or have no effect. The microbes and hosts exchange chemicals and signals, which can result in different outcomes. For example, some microbes live in the gut and help with digestion and make vitamins for humans. On the other hand, harmful microbes can cause sickness by entering host cells and making the immune system respond.

Microbial Genomics, Metagenomics, and Bioinformatics

Microbial Genomics, Metagenomics, and Bioinformatics

Microbial genomics, metagenomics, and bioinformatics are all fields that study microorganism DNA, but they each focus on different aspects. Microbial genomics looks at the full genetic information of a single type of microorganism. Metagenomics, however, examines all the DNA from many different microbes found together in a sample, like soil or the gut, without separating them first. Bioinformatics is the area that uses computers to manage, analyze, and understand the large data sets created by both genomics and metagenomics.

Vaccination and Immunology

Vaccination and Immunology

Vaccination is when a vaccine is given to the body to help its immune system, which is made up of cells and organs that protect the body from harmful things. The vaccine causes the immune system to react in a safe way, so it can learn to recognize and fight certain dangerous germs later on. This helps keep people safe without making them sick with the actual disease.

Immunology: Immunology is the branch of biomedical science that covers all aspects of the immune system in all organisms. The immune system can be broadly divided into two subsystems: the innate (non-specific) and the adaptive (specific) immune systems.

  • Innate (non-specific) immunity: This system provides the body's first line of defense and reacts broadly to any foreign substance, such as bacteria or viruses, using a set of pre-programmed responses. Components of the innate immune system include:
  • Adaptive (specific) immunity: This system is highly specific and has memory, meaning it can remember a specific pathogen and mount a faster, more effective response upon re-exposure. The key players include:

Vaccination: Vaccines are medical preparations that exploit the adaptive immune system's ability to "remember" a pathogen. They introduce a harmless version of a germ, or parts of it, to trigger an immune response without causing the disease.

Types of vaccines

  • Live-attenuated vaccines
  • Inactivated vaccines
  • Subunit, recombinant, polysaccharide, and conjugate vaccines
  • Toxoid vaccines
  • mRNA vaccines
  • Viral vector vaccines

The synergy between vaccination and immunology has had a profound impact on global health.

  • Disease prevention
  • Herd immunity
  • Research and future applications

Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology

Clinical and Diagnostic Microbiology

Clinical and diagnostic microbiology is a lab-based area that helps find, measure, and understand microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites from patient samples. This helps doctors diagnose and treat infections. The process includes collecting patient samples correctly, using different methods like growing microbes in a lab, looking at them under a microscope, and doing tests to check for specific genetic material. It also includes testing how well different medicines work against the microbes and then sharing the results with doctors to help them make treatment decisions.

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR)

Antimicrobial resistance happens when tiny living things like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and parasites change over time and stop responding to the medicines that are supposed to kill them. This makes it harder to cure infections, which can result in worse sickness, longer time in the hospital, and more deaths. While this resistance is a natural occurrence, it spreads much faster because people and animals are often using these medicines incorrectly or too much. This is now seen as a big problem for health around the world.

Zoonotic Diseases and One Health Approach

Zoonotic Diseases and One Health Approach

Zoonotic diseases are illnesses that can pass from animals to people, such as rabies, bird flu, and COVID-19. The One Health approach is a way for different groups to work together to protect health. It connects human health, animal health, and the environment, and helps stop and deal with these diseases. Experts from all these areas team up to face shared health challenges.

Zoonotic diseases: Zoonotic diseases are caused by pathogens like viruses, bacteria, parasites, or fungi that can jump from a non-human animal to a human.

Examples: Rabies, avian influenza, Ebola, tuberculosis, and COVID-19.

One Health approach: The approach is based on the understanding that the health of people, animals, and the environment are interconnected.

  • Key components

    It involves:
    • Collaboration: Encourages communication and cooperation between different professionals and sectors, such as human and veterinary medicine, ecology, public health, and agriculture.
    • Surveillance: Improves disease monitoring and surveillance by monitoring the health of humans, animals, and the environment together to detect outbreaks early.
    • Intervention: Promotes integrated strategies for disease control, prevention, and management across all levels.

Host–Pathogen Interactions and Immune Response

Host–Pathogen Interactions and Immune Response

Hosts and pathogens have a ongoing battle where the pathogen tries to enter and use the host's body, while the host's immune system works to find and get rid of the pathogen. The immune system has two parts: the quick, general response called the innate system, and the slower, more targeted response called the adaptive system. Together, these systems help control or eliminate the infection. This interaction can lead to different outcomes, such as the pathogen staying in the body without causing harm, causing a mild illness, or leading to serious disease and even death.

Host–pathogen interactions

  • Pathogen strategies
  • Pathogen factors
  • Pathogen tactics
  • Dynamic process

Immune response

  • Innate immunity:

This is the first line of defense.
    • Recognition
    • Activation
    • Effector cells
  • Adaptive immunity:

This system develops a more specific and long-lasting response to the pathogen.
  • Antigen presentation
  • T cells
  • B cells and antibodies
  • Memory

Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases

Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases

Emerging infectious diseases are new or previously unknown infections that have recently started affecting people in a population. Re-emerging diseases are ones that were around before but are now coming back with more cases or spreading to new areas after a period of fewer cases. Both types are affected by things like more contact between humans and animals, changes in the environment, global travel and trade, and shifts in how people live and behave. Examples of emerging diseases include COVID-19, and examples of re-emerging diseases include tuberculosis.

Emerging infectious diseases: Diseases that are new to a population or whose incidence is rapidly increasing.

Examples:

  • COVID-19
  • HIV
  • Lyme disease
  • West Nile virus
  • Dengue fever

Re-emerging infectious diseases: Familiar infections that have reappeared after a significant decline in their incidence, often after being considered no longer a major public health threat.

Examples:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Malaria
  • Cholera
  • Influenza
  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

Factors contributing to both:

  • Ecological changes
  • Zoonotic origins
  • Globalization
  • Human behavior

Medical and Public Health Microbiology

Medical and Public Health Microbiology

Medical and Public Health Microbiology are separate but connected areas that study microorganisms to stop, find out, and cure diseases in people. Medical microbiology looks at the germs that make people sick, and it studies how these germs get into the body and how to get rid of them through checking, treating, and stopping infections. Public health microbiology studies microorganisms at a bigger level, like in groups of people, by keeping track of disease spread, watching for outbreaks, and making plans to control how infectious diseases move around in communities.
