Dual Diagnosis

Dual diagnosis is also called co-occurring disorders(COD) and dual pathology. It is the illness of having a mental illness and a comorbid substance use disorder. There is considerable debate surrounding the appositeness of using a particular category for a heterogeneous group of personalities with complex needs and a varied range of problems. The concept can be used broadly, for example depression and alcohol use complaint.The effects of dual diagnosis is includes:

  • Poor medication compliance 
  • Physical comorbidities & poor health
  • Poor self-care
  • Increased suicide risk or violent behavior
  • Increased sexual activities
  • Possible incarceration
