Biography

Sumalee Kondo graduated from the Faculty of Medical Technology, Khon Kaen University, Thailand (1981–1984), and worked for the Faculty of Medicine, Prince of Songkla University, Thailand (1984-2003). She received a master’s degree in medical microbiology from the Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Malaysia (Dec 1988 - Mar 1991) and a doctoral degree from the University of Sydney, Australia (Jul 1992 - Feb 1997). She works at the Division of Molecular Genetics and Molecular Biology, Department of Preclinical Sciences, Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, Thailand (2003-present). Research of interest includes molecular biology, molecular genetics and molecular epidemiology, herbal plants and products, medical education, and ethical human research. Current research topics focus on antibiotic resistance of bacteria, including methicillin-resistant S. aureus and extended-spectrum β-lactamase - producing Enterobacterales, and antimicrobial activity of herbal plants. Research output includes publications and patents of hand gel and cream containing herbal extracts with effective antibacterial activity against resistant bacteria, and formula for herbal products preparation. Research distinctions include honorable mention at the Faculty of Medicine Meeting 2011, 2015 and 2020, 2nd runner up at the Faculty of Medicine Meeting 2016 and 2017, the University Publication Award 2020, and the National Research Award 2022 for the study titled “Development of herbal drugs for chronic diseases from Benjakul extract”.
