Biography

Charles N. Rotimi is a leading genetic epidemiologist internationally recognized for his work on the genomic and environmental determinants of complex diseases and health disparities, with a particular focus on populations of African ancestry. He founded the NIH Center for Research on Genomics and Global Health, where his team conducted pioneering genome-wide studies on type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and obesity in African and African-American populations. Dr. Rotimi played a central role in landmark initiatives such as HapMap, the 1000 Genomes Project, and the African Genome Variation Project. He is also the founding president of the African Society of Human Genetics and a key architect of the H3Africa initiative, a transformative pan-African genomics network supported by the NIH and the Wellcome Trust. Dr. Rotimi’s work continues to shape global understanding of human genetic diversity, disease etiology, and precision medicine across diverse populations.
