COVID-19, caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, is a highly infectious respiratory illness that became a global pandemic in 2020. It primarily spreads through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. The virus can also spread by touching surfaces contaminated with the virus and then touching the face. COVID-19 symptoms range from mild, like fever and cough, to severe, such as difficulty breathing and pneumonia. Some individuals remain asymptomatic but can still spread the virus.
