Graphene

Graphene is an atomic-scale, consisting of a single layer(mono layer) of carbon atoms tightly bound in a hexagonal honeycomb lattice nanostructure. It is graphite allotrope of carbon contains numerous double bonds. Each atom in graphene sheet occupy three Sp2 hybrid orbitals with a molecular bond length of 0.142 nanometers. Graphene is  a thinnest compound known to mankind at one atom thick. It is a building-block of graphite which is used in pencil tips and among other things.

2D materials

Two dimensional(2D) materials are defined as crystalline solids consisting of fewer or single layers of atoms. In material science, 2D materials extensively studied due to the unique structures and unprecedented properties these materials are atomically thin crystalline solids having interlayer covalent bonding and interlayer van der waals(vdWs) bonding.

Examples of Two Dimensional (2D) Materials:

  • Graphene and hexagonal boron nitride
  • Transition Metal Dichalcogenides(TMDCs)

Graphene has been in the limelight for some time now and has been synthesized in various ways and on different substrates. We summarize the synthesis methods, serval methods have been reported for the exfoliation of graphite to graphene.

Synthesis of graphene can be divided into 2 main categories:

  • Bottom-up graphene
    -Chemical vapor deposition
    -Epitaxical growth
    -Solvothermal
  • Top-down graphene
    -Micromechnical cleavage
    -Chemical synthesis through oxidation of graphite
    -Thermal exfoliation and reduction
    -Electrolytic exfoliation

Carbon Nanotube(CNT) is a miniature cylinder-shaped  allotropic forms of carbon that has hexagonal graphite molecules attached at the edges, mostly produced under chemical vapor deposition. Carbon nanotubes are also called as Buckytubes. Nanotubes have high tensile strength, so they are strong in tension and resistance stretched. Carbon nanotubes are ten times stronger than steel.

  • Single-walled carbon nanotubes
  • Multi-walled carbon nanotubes

Fullerenes

 Fullerenes is an allotrope form of carbon whose spherodical molecules consisting  of at least 60 atoms of carbon. One thing that characterizes fullerenes is they have a hollow core, or empty region of space  inside the molecule. It is made up of carbon, and there is always a hollow space inside the structure. Fullerenes are active molecules. Fullerenes molecule can be used as an antioxidant because it can easily react with radicals due to the high affinity of the electron. At the same time, fullerene is used as an anti-aging and anti-damage agent in cosmetic sector and antiviral agents.

 Graphene is the only form of carbon in which each and every atom is available for chemical reaction from both sides because of its 2D structure and it is a two-dimensional form of crystalline carbon, in which single layer of carbon atoms will form a honeycomb lattice or honeycomb structure. Every atom will have a special chemical reaction at the edge of graphene sheet. Graphene materials are used in sensors and biosensors, in electrochemistry and chromatography. Graphene will helps in conducting electricity well because it has delocalized electrons that are free to move in nature. Chemical and electro chemical sensors containing graphene materials are useful devices for detecting some chemical and biochemical compounds.
