Human mitochondrial hereditary qualities is the investigation of the hereditary qualities of human mitochondrial DNA (the DNA contained in human mitochondria). The entirety of the genetic information in human mitochondria is the human mitochondrial genome. The "powerhouses" of a cell are the tiny structures in the cell called mitochondria, which are responsible for producing energy for the cell to use.
Nuclear DNA (nDNA) does not carry mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA). The majority of multicellular organisms, including humans, inherit mitochondrial DNA only from the ovum of their mother. However, there are hypotheses that under certain conditions, paternal mtDNA transmission in humans may occur.Because Mendelian inheritance assumes that half of the genetic material in a fertilized egg (zygote) comes from each parent, mitochondrial inheritance is not Mendelian.
