Cytogenetics

Cytogenetics is primarily a subfield of genetics, but it is also a subfield of cell biology or cytology that focuses on the relationship between chromosomes and cell behavior, particularly during mitosis and meiosis. Karyotyping, chromosome analysis with G bands, and other cytogenetic banding methods are some of the methods used. “The study of chromosomes, which are long strands of  DNA and protein that contain the majority of the inheritable information in a cell,” as it is also known. In cytogenetics, samples of tissue, blood, or bone marrow are tested in a laboratory for chromosome changes, such as broken, missing, rearranged, or additional chromosomes. A genetic condition or disease, as well as some types of cancer, may be indicated by changes in particular chromosomes.
