Microbial pathogenesis refers to how a microbe causes illness. Virulence mechanisms are the specific ways microbes use to do this, like making harmful substances, sticking to host cells, and avoiding the body's defense system. Pathogenicity is the ability of a microbe to cause disease, and virulence describes how strong or severe that disease can be.
