Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases

Emerging infectious diseases are new or previously unknown infections that have recently started affecting people in a population. Re-emerging diseases are ones that were around before but are now coming back with more cases or spreading to new areas after a period of fewer cases. Both types are affected by things like more contact between humans and animals, changes in the environment, global travel and trade, and shifts in how people live and behave. Examples of emerging diseases include COVID-19, and examples of re-emerging diseases include tuberculosis.

Emerging infectious diseases: Diseases that are new to a population or whose incidence is rapidly increasing.

Examples:

  • COVID-19
  • HIV
  • Lyme disease
  • West Nile virus
  • Dengue fever

Re-emerging infectious diseases: Familiar infections that have reappeared after a significant decline in their incidence, often after being considered no longer a major public health threat.

Examples:

  • Tuberculosis
  • Malaria
  • Cholera
  • Influenza
  • Pertussis (whooping cough)

Factors contributing to both:

  • Ecological changes
  • Zoonotic origins
  • Globalization
  • Human behavior
