Niels Høiby is a distinguished Professor of Medical Microbiology at the University of Copenhagen and a highly influential figure in clinical microbiology. After earning his MD from the University of Copenhagen in 1968, Høiby specialized in Clinical Microbiology and later completed a Doctorate in Medical Science. Over his extensive career, he held numerous leadership roles, including as Chairman and Senior Resident at the Department of Clinical Microbiology at Rigshospitalet, one of Denmark’s leading hospitals.
Renowned for his groundbreaking research on biofilms and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Høiby has published widely, with over 65,000 citations, reflecting his global impact in microbiology. His contributions have been recognized through awards like the Richard C. Talamo Distinguished Clinical Achievement Award from the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, and honorary professorships at institutions in China and Germany. A respected educator, Høiby has mentored numerous professionals and serves as an honorary editor for publications on microbiology in China. Alongside his scientific work, he has contributed to Danish public life, holding elected positions within the Liberal Alliance party in the Danish Parliament and the Capital Region Council.
