Dr. hab. Marta Fiołka, assistant professor at the Department of Immunobiology, Institute of Biology and Biochemistry, Maria Curie-Skłodowska University, deals with obtaining and studying new compounds with antibacterial, antifungal and anticancer activity, originating from symbiotic bacteria and earthworm tissues. Prof. dr hab. Jolanta Rzymowska works at the Department of Biology with Genetics, Medical University of Lublin, and deals with the genetics of breast cancer and studying new compounds that act on various types of cancers. Scientists from UMCS and Medical University of Lublin have jointly developed a preparation from the body fluid of Denrobaena veneta earthworms, which destroys A549 lung cancer cells by 75-80% in in vitro studies, while not having a cytotoxic effect on normal cells. The Patent Office of the Republic of Poland has issued a decision to grant a patent for the invention "Celomic fluid of the earthworm Dendrobaena veneta for use in the treatment of lung cancer". Currently, work is underway to determine the chemical structure of the compounds included in the tested preparation. The next stage of the research will be experiments on laboratory mice.
