Emeritus Professor
Uppsala University
Sweden
Rolf Torstendahl is professor emeritus of Uppsala University, where he started as an expert in theory of history and gradually switched to historical sociology with focus on bureaucratisation and professionalisation. The latter sphere of problems led him to the history of engineers, much less studied than lawyers and physicians. He has published several studies of Swedish engineers from the 1970s, and later focussed on comparative studies of engineers in different countries. The latest book of this character is Engineers in Western Europe: Ascent – or Decline? (Cham: Springer Nature, 2021]. Since then, he has turned his interest to the globalisation of engineering.
