Dementia and Aging

Dementia refers to a group of progressive neurological disorders that affect cognitive functions such as memory, reasoning, and behaviour, often associated with aging. Alzheimer's disease is the most common form of dementia, characterized by the buildup of amyloid plaques and tau tangles in the brain, leading to neuronal damage and cognitive decline. Other types include vascular dementia, caused by impaired blood flow to the brain, and dementia with Lewy bodies, characterized by abnormal protein deposits. Aging is the primary risk factor for dementia, with prevalence increasing significantly in older age groups, although it is not a normal part of aging. Early diagnosis, management of risk factors like cardiovascular health, and support for caregivers are crucial in addressing the impact of dementia on individuals and society.
