Aging and Cognition

Aging affects cognition by typically slowing processing speed, memory retrieval, and executive functions such as decision-making and planning. Neuroimaging studies show structural changes in the brain, including volume loss and decreased connectivity, which contribute to cognitive decline. Factors like education, lifestyle (e.g., physical activity, diet), and social engagement can influence cognitive aging trajectories positively. Cognitive impairment in aging ranges from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, which severely impacts daily functioning. Interventions like cognitive training, brain stimulation techniques, and pharmaceutical approaches are areas of ongoing research to mitigate cognitive decline in aging populations.
